Toronto Life Magazine

Toronto Life magazine commissioned us to create photographs for a story highlighting the epidemic of bad renovations plaguing the city. The article focused on contractors leaving jobs incomplete, sites in disarray, and homeowners stuck with the fallout. We were given a few key details to illustrate—such as a gaping hole in a bathroom floor and plastic tarps draped everywhere—and were otherwise free to interpret and flesh out the scenes.
The bathroom interior remains one of our favorite images. The tight space allowed for an intimate, detail-rich shot that captured the chaos and frustration of a botched renovation. The lighting in particular was highly effective, convincingly evoking natural daylight and adding to the realism and mood of the piece.
